G.  IRVING

George Henry Irving signed up as private 13147 with the Liverpool Kings regiment on 24 August 1914. records show he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighed 128 pounds with a chest measurement of 36 inches. He had a fresh compexion, Blue eyes and light Brown hair. He also had a scar on the back of his left wrist. George is single.

George gave his age on enlistment as 24 years and 80 days, if correct it would mean his birthday should be 5 June. He also notes that he had previous service with the Liverpool Kings regiment. His parents are listed as Henry and Elizabeth Irving of 146 Orwell road, Liverpool. George is appointed Lance Coproral on 7 December 1914.

George's Signature On His Enlistment Papers

His regiment arrives in France on 26 September 1915.  While in action on 26 April 1916 George recieves a gun shot wound to his right thigh and is admitted to hospital, then on 6 May 1916 he is admitted again suffering from Shell Shock. He is in such a bad state that he is sent back to England and transfered to the Cambridge Hospital at Aldershot with Shell shock and deafness. A doctor notes that George became very depressed around 14 June. He is discharged on 26 June 1916, but is readmitted the following day, and he now stays in hospital until 23 September 1916

Not much is mentioned about what George did next, maybe he was sent home to recover for a few months. On 30 June 1917 he is transfered to the Labour Corps, joining the 733 Labour Corps under the service number 194207.On 5 September 1917 he leaves Southampton for France, arriving at Havre on 8 September.

George is appointed Acting Corporal with pay on 8 November 1917 and is given full promotion to Corporal on 1 December 1917. By 5 September 1918 he is at the Lewis Gun school, moving to a depot as acting Sergeant on 20 September before returning to the School on 24 September. George is given two weeks leave in Calais between 3 Octer and 17 October 1918, and on his return is promoted to Sergeant.

A few weeks later the war is over and George stays in France. His promotions show that he adapted well to his role within the Labour Corps, however not all was well with George. On 20 February 1919 he is seen by Doctors at Mons, who note he has Deafness due to shell shock, Heart trouble and a fractured wrist due to Shrapnel. The doctor notes that he has discharge from both ears, his left ear is deaf and his right ear has dull hearing. George is suffering chest pains, and his wrist is fractured. The doctor says he will be unable to do any heavy work.George is sent back to England on 25 February 1919.

The Mons Army Doctor Report Notes George's Condition

Back home he is seen by more doctors and transfered to Z reserves on 26 March 1919, and awarded a pension of 6 Shillings and 6 Pence starting from 27 March, to be reviewed after 39 weeks. The pension board agreed that George had 10% disability.

So George goes back home to Liverpool to his parents. He is now 28 and his war is over. The troubles he has faced over the past four years have taken their toll with him, but far worse is to come. George contracts Meningitis with paralysis of the facial nerve, and his troubled heart can not cope with the strain. sadly he passes away at home on 19 May 1919. The only good thing is that he had two months alongside his loved ones.

The service records for John have survived. He joined the Kings Regiment on 2 August 1911, giving his age as 19 years and 1 month and his occupation as a Mill hand working for a Mr James Proctor. He is 5 feet 8 inches tall with a chest measurement of 38 1/4 inches. His vision and physical development are both listed as good.

John's Signature On His Enlistment Papers

National Emergency Document Signed By John On 24 December 1914

John is single when he enlists in 1911, but in 1913 he marries Julia Deane. Julia has a daughter Bridgit who is John's Step daughter and on 1 September 1913 a son Walter is born to them. John remains in Liverpool with his regiment until 20 Fenruary 1915 when he sails for France, arriving the next day. Sadly his wife Julia is listed on the Liverpool death records for the first qaurter of 1915, she is aged just 26 and is also listed as having died on John's later service records. On 6 March 1915 while in France John is charged with being absent from 27-28 February 1915 and fined two days pay and awarded 24 hours field punishment number 2. Had John heard of Julia's death? if so the punishment was a bit harsh.

An explanation of this punishment can be found here http://www.awm.gov.au/encyclopedia/field_punishment/index.asp

John is admitted to the 5 field ambulance station on 26 June 1915 suffering with with Cattargh and the following day is admitted to a field hospital at Chocques with Bronchial Cattargh. By 30 June John is admitted to the general hospital at Etaples with Bronchitis nasal cattargh and by 3 July is is aboard a hospital ship at Etaples suffering with Cystisis Bronchial. He sails back to England and spend the following year recovering. I am happy his children would have got to see him after losing their mother earlier in the year.

On 14 July 1916 John sailed from Folkstone and arrived in Boulonge the same day. The following day he is at Etaples and whilst there he joined the 9th Liverpool Kings Regiment on 20 July and proceeded to the front line. on 24 July he ceases to be part of the 9th Kings, I assume he had joined up with his old regiment by then. Sadly John is killed in action on 8 August 1916 at Guillemont.

On 10 February 1919 he was admitted to hospital with Gastritis, then five days later he is admitted to a general hospital before the gastritis becomes so serious that the Army send him back to England on 19 February 1919. He arrives at Brighton and is taken and admitted to Cambridge hospital, Aldershot. There is a hospital report but it is impossible to read, what I can make out is that Edward was admitted with Chronic Gastritis and that a Gastric inflammatory was performed. Sadly on 13 March Edward suffered a hemorrhage and died. I really hope his family was able to get to visit him in Aldershot. Edward was laid to rest at Ford Cemetery in Liverpool.
