The service recirds have survived for James Flynn. He joined the Royal field Artillery, as a Gunner on 23 October 1912, in Cardiff. Gives his age as 18 Years and 10 months, and his occupation as Seaman. Stating he has served before with the South Lancashire Regiment, probably in the Militia. His height is 5 feet 71/4 inches, weighs 138 pounds, with a chest measurement of 37 inches. He has a fresh complexion, Grey eyes, and Brown hair.

On 16 December 1912 James was taking part in a horse ride excersise with his regiment. They where trotting round in circles in single file. His sergeant noted " I was lead, The ride had quitted stirrups, and dropped reins. When on turning round, I saw Gunner Flynn on the ground. I dismounted, and went over to him, and picked him up. He seemed in great pain, but recovered enough to walk down to the hospital. He was riding a very quick horse"

Patrick's Great, Great Grandaughter Helen Simpson contacted me with details of his service and life in Liverpool. I had not found anything concrete enough about Patrick and his details have only been added to this site after talking to Helen, all thanks go to her for adding Patrick here. I think it is a nice touch that his Great Great Grandaughter has added him to this web site, and I believe that Patrick would pleased also.
Helen has provided the following information.
Patrick was killed in Belgium on the 24th April 1915. He fought with the Irish Fusiliers and I believe that he trained in Cork. We actually have a letter that he sent in the March of 1915 to his son Philip Fogarty.
Patrick was married to Jessie nee Hughes I think sometime around 1903/04.They had 4 children Philip, Robert, Jessie and Mary. They lived at 13 Eldon Street. I think Patrick was born around 1879 but I have been unable to find his
date of birth.The Fogarty's are listed at Living at 13 Eldon Street in the 1911 census.

His records note that he was awarded his 1st good conduct badge on 2 September 1916, for competion of two years service. He is admitted to hospital on 13 April 1918 with an anscess to his left thigh, he rejoins his unit on 20 April 1918.

HMS LAURENTIC
The Laurentic was the ship that Dr Crippen tried to escape from England on.
The Laurentic sailed from Liverpool bound for Halifax. She was carrying a valuable cargo of about 3,200 gold bars. The ship struck two mines off Malin Head, Donegal, Ireland. At least 350 people lost their lives, many from exposure to the freezing water. After the war the gold bars where salvaged from the wreck.

Also recorded are details of his height, 5 feet 91/2 inches, weight 158 pounds, Chest 35 inches, medium complexion, Grey eyes, and dark hair.


pension details are addressed to his wife and son Robert at 16 court 5 house Burlington Street, Liverpool. And to his mother Catherine Tully at 19 Sherwood Street, Liverpool.
Robert's service records show that after completing training, he sailed on the " Borda" disembarking on 3 March 1916 at Suez. On 29 March 1916 he left aboard the " Transylvania ", arriving in Marseilles on 4 April 1916, and joining up with the BEF. He joined his unit on 24 May at Etaples, but sadly Robert was killed in action on 25 July 1916.
